Preparing for a Career

Choosing a career pathway that is right for you takes some time, so it is important to research your options and develop a game plan in advance. To help you prepare, we have collected information on key industries and high-wage, in-demand occupations in the region. These resources provide you with important information on potential careers, wages, job openings, job growth and education/training requirements. These tools are meant to help you make informed decisions about your career and educational opportunities.

An NCWorks Career Advisor will be available to assist you in talking through options most suitable for you based upon your interests, prior work experiences, and education.

Industry Profiles

We have identified six industries that are in-demand and offer great wages and the opportunity for you to move up in your career. Click on each thumbnail below to learn more about each industry sector and the different careers you may pursue.

Occupations In Demand

Where are the Jobs? - This is a list of the occupations within an industry sector that are projected to grow in the region over the next 10 years. This resource will help you locate those jobs with the greatest employment opportunities in the region.

High-Wage, High Growth Jobs - This is a list of the occupations within specific industry sectors that have been identified as having great pay and a growing occupational field. These jobs reflect wages that are considered self-sustaining and offer upward mobility opportunities.

Occupational Profiles

Another great way to find out which career you may like to pursue is to research what the job entails, such as:

  • What day-to-day tasks will you have to perform? - is the job repetitive or will you be doing something different each day?
  • What are the working conditions like? - will you be on your feet or sitting all day or will you have to be out in the weather?
  • What do people who work in the field say about the job?

You can find out the answers to your questions by going on a tour of the job site (if available), talking to people who are in the field, finding work experience or job shadow opportunities or by checking out blogs, podcasts and social media. You can also check out all of the videos that Career One Stop has posted on their website by clicking here.

The NC Career Clusters Guide is also a great tool to help you learn more about different industry sectors and occupations.

What's Next?

Now that you have researched local industries and occupations in demand, taken your Traitify Assessment, and narrowed down your job preference, what's next? You need to ask yourself a few things first:

  1. Do I have the skills and training required for this job?
  2. Do I need to find training to be able to obtain this job?
  3. Do I want to attend training?
  4. Do I have the required funds to go into a training program?
  5. Do I need assistance to reach my goal?

No matter your answers, we can help! Contact your local NCWorks Career Center and speak with a career advisor who can assist you with the next steps to getting the career of your dreams.
